Inspired artist
Thomas Blanchard-
He uses flowers as the main focus of his art. He has signature coils and swirls of color that make his art stand out from any other artists work. A short video was made with a few of his pieces, flowers and foliage were lit on fire and the smoke and fire created a great picture. Thomas also takes pictures where her froze the flowers in water. I love his pieces because his pictures come out so clear and vibrant in color. They are all so unique and different from any other work of art I've ever seen.

Most helpful warm-ups
The two images above were the most helpful warm-ups for me because they helped me with shading and being able to draw different shapes easier.
Composition- The placement or arrangement of visual elements or 'ingredients' in a work of art, as distinct from the subject.
Value- Deals with the lightness or darkness of a color.

PROS-
Pen- You can get better detail in smaller spots.
Charcoal- You can add better value to images and create great shadows.
Pencil- Quick and easy to use.

Meet your mentor
My mentor was Devin. She does really any art she wants to and enjoys doing.
https://devin-apex-18.weebly.com/ I think all of Devin's art is amazing and I'm always so inspired to continue doing art and getting good at it and become as good as she is. This picture to the right is my favorite painting that Devin has done. |
Learning colors
idea of place
My painting was from when I went to Monticello in Charlottesville, Virginia. I chose this picture just becauseI enjoy history and it was very fun to go to Thomas Jeffersons house and get to see how he lived. The thing I found most challenging was all the different shades of green I had to use in the painting. I think just the idea that you can see its a place makes it important by itself because I didn't think it'd turn out the way it did.
The first thing I did was I painted the hill in the background and added some texture to it. Then I added the path to the picture and made some minor changes to it so it wasn't just one color on the picture. I then added the leaves and tree limb at the top of the picture. After all that, I just added little details to the picture and added some more texture to different parts of the piece.

sculpture vessel
I plan on cutting out some shapes on the side so that you can see through it in different spots. I would like to finish it by making different shapes of triangles and circles on two opposite sides. I plan on using my piece I can put a candle in and it would shine through the holes and make pretty shapes. The more difficult parts of this project are how the clay will start to dry out and then thats when i had to move faster because it would mean that my piece was more likely to break if i cut something into it. I think the most successful part so far was just getting the thing together because I thought I would have broken it.
Steps:
1. I made a template so I would know how big each slab should be.
2. Then I rolled out a slab of clay so that I could cut the correct shapes into it.
3. I then scratch and slip the edges and put the slabs together to make my box.
4. Then I had to wait for it to dry so that we could fire it.

My finished piece
Since I let it dry, I have just been waiting and working on other projects. Once it was dry and had been fired, I glazed it so it looked a lot better. Something I think I did very well on was how I fixed the side that had broken and made it look a lot better than it would have if I had kept it the same way. I would be a lot more careful if I had to do it again, and know that I need to keep it sort of damp so that it wont break as easily.
Lionscut printmaking
Even though the image didn't have many lines, the ones it did have were very clean and easy to fix if there was a mess up, which there was plenty of times. If I were to do it again, I would make it do the cactus is actually on the ground and not inside of it. I would also put more detail into the plane spots of the piece.
I think the face proportion is helping me the most in the project because the picture I’m drawing has a lot of little details on the face. This helps me know where to put things and how much of something to draw.
The thing most surprising is that the picture I am drawing is from the side so it puts things a little off balance because the angle that it’s at makes different things look bigger or smaller than they actually are.

This is a picture I drew of myself. In this whole picture I just used lighter pencils and some darker ones. At first I wasn't sure where to start it off, but then I figured I would make a three by three grid and draw each different part in grids. That helped a lot so that different things weren't out of proportion or sideways. If I could go back and changed the process I would darken certain spots because it is very light but I didn't want to make it too dark. The hardest part of this picture was all the different hair lines. They were all going different directions and it was hard to make it look like the picture that I was basing it off of.

For my watercolor perspective it was taken from 1st perspective, and it was also taken in New York. I was walking from Time Square to Central Park and I really liked how the road looked like it went on forever so I took a picture of it. A lot of the building in NYC are very close to the same color so I wanted to change some of the building colors so that it was a big blob of one color. I had to leave the car out because there was so many of them and they all had a lot of detail on them. I think my warm-up of the hallway helped by me using perspective in different ways and that I know where to put what.
Mixed media
When I first started this piece I just drew a bunch of squiggly lines all over the paper. Then I did the technique where you can't put the same color next to itself so that made it a little tough with the few amounts of color I was using. The first layer I did marker, then chalk, then acrylic paint, then the gold feathers and then the other smaller feathers. My word was shape and texture. I did many different shapes in this piece, and you can sort of feel the gold and white feathers and that counts as texture.

My final project
For the critique we used the word T.A.G. T is for telling the artist something you liked about their piece. A is for asking the artist a question about their piece. And G is for giving a positive suggestion to that person piece or something the could change if they re-did it later.
When I chose to do this picture I knew it would be a hard one to do. It was difficult because there are so many different greens in the picture and there all on top of each other so I did it as a challenge and I think I did somewhat well on it.
The process was very difficult because as I did all the greens some of them were so close to color that they blended in very well. I had to do so many different ones and make sure they weren't used previously. I think the outcome could have been a lot better for the time I spent on it, but I think it turned out very well. Process; The first thing I did was I painted the whole canvas sheet pink so that the colors would go better on it. Then I did the top half blue and the bottom a light green. I then put different greens on the hills to make it look like the trees had shadows and what not on them. I painted the path on there after I had all the different trees and bush colors. Then I added the tree limb in the top corner and After I did that I realized that I never put clouds in the sky. I didn't want to have to paint over the whole thing again since that was the last day that I had to finish it, so I just painted them in between the limbs as best as possible. |
Final exam
2). What is the point of this class? What did you get out of it?
To me the point of this class is to be able to learn new things and being able to apply new artistic skills to anything we do in the future. Well for me I love art and I learned many new techniques that I would now be able to use now that I never knew of before and I think it will make my picture turn out a whole lot better. |
3). Medium: which medium did you most enjoy working with and why? Which medium did you not use but wish you had explored?
I really enjoy just drawing things with a pencil because its very easy to correct a mistake that was made and there are so many different types of pencils that can be used so it could work in many different ways. I would have really enjoyed to use a fountain pen, because my brother has one and I love writing with them and I think a wonderful piece of art could come from it. |
